The Jean Genie, David Bowie (Aladdin Sane, 1973)
The Jean Genie by David Bowie: a song that was going to be an inspiration for generations of musicians to come, and one small band in particular. While heading in a new musical direction the small Glaswegian punk band Johnny and The Self Abusers took on a new name inspired by the Bowie song: they became Simple Minds. Almost 30 years later, both song and band became the inspiration for a fan community heading in a new direction: www.SoSimpleMinded.com sees the light of day.
The official Simple Minds website (www.simpleminds.com) had a forum from November 2001 until May 2005, which enabled the band’s fans to interact and meet. After the closing of this official forum on 6th May 2005, a couple of fans created their own MSN group called Today I Died Again which functioned as a stop gap while a new website with a proper forum was created. The result of these creative efforts was www.SoSimpleMinded.com and went online in November 2005; its goal providing a meeting point for Simple Minds fans from all over the world and informing those fans about the current and past activities of the band.
When Simple Minds are touring www.SoSimpleMinded.com becomes a focal point for fans to swap tickets,to coordinate travel arrangements, to get the latest information about each Simple Minds gig as it happens and to meet like minded people who are travelling to the same gigs. We also try to organise an unofficial, fan produced, not for profit t-shirt for each tour.
So far we have succesfully brought many diverse fans together, provided the latest gig information and created t-shirts during the following tours.
There are several main areas to the www.SoSimpleMinded.com website.
Forum is a place for Simple Minds fans to chat and interact on a variety of topics. It includes a news section which keeps members abreast of all news related to the band or individual band members (present and past) and their side projects. While most sections of the forum are in English, there are also several sub - forums in other languages (German, Dutch, French, Italian and Spanish), making this the largest multilingual Simple Minds forum around.
Members are invited to contribute to the content of the site by sending in their own concert reviews, photographs, scans of memorabillia such as tickets, setlists, concert, promo material, newspaper articles, etc.
Tour Database is an evolution of a database created by several people, that previously existed as the website www.sm-tours.com. It is the most comprehensive online tour database and enables fans to find detailed information about Simple Minds gigs such as venues, setlists, tickets, posters, photographs, reviews and memorabilia.
On This Day is an online archive of Simple Minds activites for every day of the year.
Tribute provides information on Simple Minds tribute bands such as sample MINDS, MIND2MODE and 1984.
